Self Defence

On the 27th and 28th of March the year eight girls of room 16, 17 and 18 went to learn self-defence in the multi-purpose room with Rana. We learnt many things and had a very good time; we learnt how to use our hands, feet, arms, legs, brain and voice to punch, kick and yell properly!

There were many techniques Rana taught us at self-defence, for example, the Ballerina kick and the Hammer Fist; we can use these techniques to defend ourselves from bad people in the future.

Swimming Sports

Swimming sports was held on Friday 7th of March. We had lots of fun yelling, cheering and chanting for our whanau Ngata.  We are very proud of the five people in our class who participated in the competitive swimming races and excited that they got ranked between 1st and 3rd place. Congratulations to Creshanda who came 3rd in the year 8 girls 50m  freestyle, Naomi  in year 8 who came 1st in breaststroke 2nd in year 8  girls backstroke and 3rd in year 8 girls butterfly. And also to Georgia who got ranked in 2nd in year 7 girls freestyle, 2nd in year 7 girls backstroke and 3rd in year 7 girls breaststroke and also for Selina who came,  2nd in breaststroke. A big well done for Jimmy who came first for everything- backstroke, breaststroke, butterfly and freestyle. Ngata came 3rd in this year’s annual swimming sports. Everybody had an awesome day! Goodluck to our swimmers who are participating in the South Eastern Zone Swimming Sports.

Introducing our inquiry groups

In the first few weeks of school we explored the overall whanau topic of ‘Outdoor Experiences‘. We wrote down all the key words we could think of that associated with this. From here we categorised the words into four topics. These four topics decided our groups - we had to rank which topic we would prefer to study for this inquiry topic.

These are our groups, HOT Questions and Social Action (your child should be able to explain what these mean):

Great Grand Muddas – Water Safety.

(From left: Michael, Leroy, Selina, Amy, HanaJane, Ethan and Ellie. Absent: Nancy)

HOT Question: Investigate reasons why many Howick Intermediate students are unable to swim, survey students at Howick Intermediate school in order to find out how many students are beginning swimmers and formulate a plan of what type of support we can provide in school for the people who are unable to swim.

Social Action: Create a floatation device to support people with limited or no confidence in the pool – life jackets, fludder boards.

The Olympians – Fitness in schools

(top left: Darren, Connor, Daniel, Jimmy. Bottom Left: Dante, Naomi, Creshanda and Shekinah)

HOT Question: Investigate reasons why some preadolescent students are physically unfit, identify what is available at the moment for fitness at our school, and formulate a plan to convince our students that fitness can be fun.

Social Action: Students will work with Mrs Chang to create a fun and enjoyable fitness programme that encourages preadolescents to be active.

Tree Huggers - Deforestation

(top left: Mark, V.J, Gabriel, Tyler. bottom left: Chih-Li, Surbhi. Absent: Kaira)

HOT Question:  Investigate reasons why deforestation occurs, determine the impacts of deforestation on local animals, and construct a plan to reduce the effects the amount of deforestation in the Auckland region.
Social Action: Students will work with Mrs Templehoff to make a cushion to inform the public of the effects of deforestation.

Rubbish Bins – Marine life
(Back left: ChaoQi, Julius. Front left: Bahar, Demetrius, Nikhita and Georgia. Absent: James and Junior)

HOT Question: Identify reasons why people litter in our ocean, discuss how we can make people aware of the danger plastic has to our marine life, and construct a plan on how we can educate people about the effects of littering.
Social Action: Students will work with Mrs Chang to create a musical composition to inform people about the dangers of littering to our marine life.

Meet the teacher evening

It was great to meet a few of the parents at the Meet the Teacher Evening.  For those of you that were unable to make it we talked about:

School Diary - It is important that students remember to bring these both to school and home everyday. It is fantastic if parents are able to check in these regularly as this is one way of keeping the lines of communication between home and school open.

- Absences - If your child is away for any reason it is important that you phone or email me as soon as possible in the morning to let us know, you are able to leave a voicemail message when calling the school to explain the reason for the students absence.
Office Number- (09) 534 3922 or email admin@howickint.school.nz

- Uniform - It is really important that the students follow our school uniform code, we have discussed this and have pictures in the classroom to refer to. If students do not have the correct uniform this means that they lose a green card, which unfortunately means they will not be able to receive their gold card for the next week. This loss of the Gold card means that they lose privileges such as using the swimming pool at lunch, using the tuck shop at morning tea at lunch time (they can still order lunches through the lunch order system).

We need our swimming gear at school every Monday and Friday and our PE gear at school every Wednesday, Thursday and Friday this term. This is a part of our school uniform and must be worn correctly.

-  Classroom Rules - These have been discussed with students and letters have been sent home to parents for you to look through as well. If you need an extra copy just let me know.

- Homework - Students should be bringing homework home every night. I know many students have commitments after school so we have negotiated that students have from Monday to Monday to get all their work complete giving them the weekend to get anything they may not have done throughout the week complete.

If you have any questions please email me at jasminec@howickint.school.nz

Our class rules

During the first week of school Room 16 co-constructed our own classroom rules. We decided on 3 key points that would shape our classroom environment. We explored each point and set expectations of behaviour and work ethic. Your child should be able to tell you more about this.

Special thanks to James and Dante for creating this masterpiece :)

Welcome to Room 16, I am looking forward to the exciting year ahead and establishing strong professional relationships between myself, parents/caregivers and the students in Room 16.

My name is Jasmine Clark, I’m from Pukekohe and just finished studying down at Waikato University last year. Being a young beginning teacher I have a zest for life and bring new innovative ideas to the classroom.

This is my first class so I’m excited to learn alongside my students and develop as a teacher.  I believe it is important to have open communication lines between whanau/family and the school, so if you have any concerns or queries please feel free to contact me at jasminec@howickint.school.nz.
